Pei Yi Tsai (b. 1994 in Taipei, Taiwan; based in London, UK) graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2024. Tsai draws inspiration from a deep exploration of individual experiences and queer identity. In her representational paintings, she weaves these emotions and struggles into her work, reflecting the challenges individuals face when navigating issues of identity and societal pressure. The gender ambiguity of the figures in her paintings reflects her own queer identity, and her work delves deeply into various aspects of identity, including gender, culture, family, and personal growth. These themes run throughout her body of work, portraying the exploration of queer identity in East Asian society and the individual's role and values in a complex social environment.
